Daniel Sanchez was born to Eulalio and Antonia Sanchez on March 31, 1925, in Winslow, Arizona. He attended Winslow Elementary schools, and then Winslow High School. He dropped out of school as a junior, to join the US Army. He always said he had done this because both his older brothers were serving during World War II, and he learned that his older brother Robert had been captured by German troops and was in a prison camp.
As a young man he helped his brothers and father they would go south of town and chop wood.
They had a wood burning stove and heaters in their home. His father also would sell wood and coal to the residents of Winslow, and his sons helped.
In 1950, he married the love of his life Margaret Lopez, they had five children. When the youngest child was approximately four years old, Daniel and his wife took in two foster children and raised them as their own. These kids remained in the home until they left to go into the service, or to get married.
When his children were growing up he would always play and participate in activities with them. As they grew older, he would take them to sports activities and fairs. His favorite activities were hunting and fishing with the family. He also enjoyed playing golf with his two sons Ruben & Danny Jr, playing cards, and doing magic tricks with the grandchildren. He especially enjoyed going to the casinos, he enjoyed going to Laughlin the most.
Sometimes Daniel would take his children that wanted to go hunting with him to the forest.
The hunting trip would consist of riding around the forest, and having picnics, on occasion he would say we will go this way and we would end up in Payson, Arizona at a restaurant.
Daniel worked for the Winslow Mail for over 30 years, he retired in 1991. He worked two jobs most of his working life, he worked at Public Market and was a kind, honest and dedicated employee to his employers. Daniel never had anything bad to say about anyone he met, he always treated everyone with respect.
Daniel loved his faith and our Lord; he taught his children how to attend church and the meaning of the sacraments. He donated a lot of his time when he was able to at Madre de Dios working on the grounds.
Daniel had a great sense of humor, and would even find something to make jokes out of when things were not the best they could be. Daniel was very patient and calm, he never raised his voice or yelled.
He is survived by three daughters Mary, Beatrice, and Margaret (Maggie) Sanchez, and a son Ruben Sanchez, also his foster daughter Darlene McDaniels, and foster son Preston May; ten Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren; brother Robert Sanchez and sister Margaret Mazza.
He was preceded in death by his parents Eulalio and Antonia Sanchez. Wife Margaret Sanchez, Daughter Patricia (Patsy) Sanchez, son Daniel (Danny) Sanchez Jr., Brother Lorenzo Sanchez, and sisters Charlotte Lucero, Helen Ortega, and Beatrice Galvan.
