Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, AZ - Posted: Sunday, January 27, 2013 - Donald Koch passed away Jan. 20, 2013 at his residence with his loving family by his side. Donald was born on Oct. 25, 1920, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Alois and Alma (Schweitzer) Koch. At the age of 21, Donald joined the United States Army Air Corps. Following extensive training, Donald joined the 428th fighter squadron, 474th fighter group in early 1944 as a pilot of the Lockheed P.38 Lightning. While stationed in England Donald had flown 33 successful missions over Europe. On Aug. 25, 1944, Donald’s plane was shot down over France. Donald was wounded in the leg and subsequently captured by the Germans. He spent nine months as a P.O.W. before being liberated by the Russians on April 30, 1944. Donald’s military career spanned 23 years until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal and most recently was honored by the French Government with the French Legion of Honour, France’s highest award for his actions and his part in securing France’s freedom. Donald and his wife, Marion moved to Lake Havasu City 35 years ago from Riverside, Calif. Donald enjoyed all types of water sports, playing a round of golf or setting down with a good book. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting with friends. Donald was a member of The Elks Lodge No. 2399 and American Legion Post 81. Donald is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Marion; sons, Glen A. Koch of Temecula, Calif. and Gary D. Koch of Aurora, Colo.; daughters, Susan D. Koch of Irvine, Calif. and Gay Ann Parrish of Menifee, Calif.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
