The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Tuesday, January 29, 2013 Ruth Elizabeth Waara, 80, passed away, Jan. 26, 2013, in her home in Prescott, Ariz., after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family. Ruth was a devoted wife and mother. She was born July 29, 1932, in Massachusetts to her parents Gerda and Louis Horst. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Hugo; her daughter Renee (Sten Rino); son James (Jennifer); and five grandchildren. Her beloved brother, Edwin, passed away July 29, 1993. Ruth graduated from the Texas State College for Women in 1954 with a degree in physical education. Ruth worked as a physical education teacher for 35 years in Minnesota. During those years, she also held part time jobs as pool director and swimming teacher. Her second career after moving to the southwest was in the private sector. Ruth loved the great outdoors - from canoe trips in the boundary waters to being a camp counselor to appreciating bird life in the southwest. She enjoyed experiencing the wonders of desert life with her grandchildren. Ruth shared her passion for the homegrown through gardening and food preservation with her family. She will be greatly missed, may she rest in peace. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at the Prescott National Cemetery.
