JANAY, Arlo (Goat)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 02/01/2013 Arlo Janay, 70, of Canyon Day, went home to our heavenly Father Jan. 24, 2013, at Summit Healthcare in Show Low. Arlo also known to many as “Goat” was born Oct. 5, 1942 in Canyon Day to the late Author and the late Gunnie Danford Janay. Arlo was naturally a people person and enjoyed caring for the needs of others. He enjoyed singing Apache songs, playing horseshoes, bingo, watching baseball and basketball games. He had worked for Canyon Day Livestock Association, along with the tree thinning contractors with his foster father the late John Quintero, and did mostly labor work for tribal programs. In his early years Arlo attended old Whiteriver Day School and East Fork Mission, where he played the sports he loved basketball and baseball. After a lengthy illness he was sent to the Tall Pine Rehab Center for recovery and spends the last 10 years of his life there. Arlo is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Drucilla Bead Janay; daughter Sophie Lewis; sister Esther Janay; foster brother Theodore DeClay, Sr.; three foster sisters: Charlotte Quintero, Vanta Cooley, and Leola Larzelere; five granddaughters: Valencia Dazen Satzinger, Kristy Bonito, Vanessa Thompson, Alexis Lewis and Felicia Lewis and many grandchildren’s, great grandchildren, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Author and Gunnie Danford Janay, foster parents John and Bessie Massey Quintero, daughter Dorinda Bead, grandson Boshane Thompson, brother Lincoln Janay and three sisters: Elisa Riley, Julia Antonio and Clara Janay. A one night wake was held Jan. 29, at his residence in Canyon Day. Funeral services were held at the Fort Apache LDS church Jan. 30. He was laid to rest at the Canyon Day Cemetery.
