Virgil then graduated from Delano High School in 1949, in Delano, California. In March 1951 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan. While in the service, Virgil was a jet aircraft mechanic, and was honorably discharged in 1955. He then returned to the Gila Valley, and married Carol Carpenter from Eden on July 20, 1956 in the Mesa Arizona Temple.
In 1957, Virgil graduated as an honor student from Eastern Arizona Junior College, and subsequently received his Bachelor of Arts in Education at Arizona State University in Tempe.
