DAUGHERTY, Carmaleet (Carm)

The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, Arizona, Tuesday, February 05, 2013 Carmaleet Daugherty of Clarkdale, went home to be with the Lord February 1, 2013. Carmeleet, known as Carm to her friends, was born May 5, 1921 in Belleville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James W. Daugherty and her sister Cecilia. Carm is survived by her daughters Trudy Hamilton of Cottonwood, Kathy Kowal (Tony) of Cottonwood, two sons, Leonard (Bernice) of Greenwood, South Carolina and James (Carolyn) of Sedona. Carm had seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren. Carmaleet was well known in Clarkdale and Cottonwood for her many years of work with various charity and community organizations. Carmaleet was initiated in Williams Chapter #34, Order of the Eastern Star, on October 5, 1972. She first served as Worthy Matron in 1977 during the year of Worthy Grand Matron Mabel Nolte. Carmaleet and Mabel were very close over the years. When sister Mabel passed away shortly before Grand Chapter last August, Carmaleet was one of only a few remaining Worthy Matrons from Sister Mabel’s year. Carmaleet served a second term as Worthy Matron of Williams Chapter. After Carmaleet and her husband Jim moved to Clarkdale, she affiliated with Diamond Chapter #7 in March of 1984. She served as Worthy Matron in Diamond #7 in 1997. She served as Grand Ruth in the Grand Chapter of Arizona in 2000, and was continually active in her local chapter holding various offices and committee appointments, and in Grand Chapter where she held many committee appointments. Probably Carmaleet’s favorite committee was Community Service. She would shop for the needs of the local Crisis Center and then deliver the supplies to them. The Center was always very appreciative of Carmaleet’s efforts and she enjoyed helping them. When she could drive, she was always available to her friends and neighbors to drive them to various appointments, grocery shopping and other necessary trips. There are countless examples of Carmaleet’s unselfish and generous nature. Carmaleet was a remarkable lady and an exemplary example for all of us. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday February 9 at 2PM in the Lamplighter Village Community Building in Clarkdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Carm’s memory to the Northern Arizona Hospice.
