Lloyd Gilbert 84, Lloyd passed away peacefully at home on February 8, 2013, with his loving wife at his side. Lloyd was born on January 29, 1929 on the Hopi reservation at the Village of Upper Moenkopi and was a member of the Rabbit Tobacco Clan.
Lloyd received his education at the Phoenix Indian School. Lloyd had a passion for the game of basketball. He coached for the Northern Arizona University elementary school in the 1970’s, he refereed high school games as well as reservation tournaments. He even had the opportunity to referee the Harlem Globetrotters in the 1960’s when they played on the Navajo reservation. Lloyd retired from Northern Arizona University after a respectful career of 26 years.
He is survived by wife; Ethel Sakiestewa Gilbert of 62 years, son; Dr. Willard Sakiestewa Gilbert (Christine), daughters; Darlene Gilbert, Regina Gilbert (Vernon M.), one sister; Edwina Quache, grandchildren; Ramona Morales (Steve), Christopher Gilbert (Chrissy), Dr. Matthew Sakiestewa Gilbert (Kylene), Angela Hopewell (Mitch), Lisa Wathogoma, Victoria Lynch, great grandchildren; Alejandra Valenzuela, Gilbert Valenzuela, Alyssa Hopewell, Justin Gilbert, Isaac Hopewell, Hannah Gilbert, Bradley Gilbert, Meaghan Gilbert, Noelle Gilbert, Luke Gilbert, and other close family members.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his father, mother, three sisters, two brothers, one granddaughter, two nieces, and one nephew.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 13, at 11 AM at Lozano’s funeral chapel, 2545 N Fourth Street.
Burial will follow in Citizens Cemetery.
Lloyd was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather, who will be greatly missed by his family and others who knew him.
The family would like to thank Pastor Wilbert Honahni, Hospice Chaplain Monteverde, the staff of the Hospice Compassus of Flagstaff, and the staff of the Moenkopi Senior Center for their full support in caring for Lloyd this past year.
