MAUREL, Anthony J. (Tony)

Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, Arizona, Tuesday, March 05, 2013 Anthony J. Maurel, born in 1916, was 96 when he passed away peacefully, on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013. “Tony” was a long time resident of Seattle. His late wife, Wilma H. Maurel, predeceased him in August 2012 after 72 years of marriage. Anthony is a grandson and descendant of a Globe Arizona pioneer family (Andre and Marie Maurel), stonemason and later, city developer, who immigrated from France and in 1882 Homesteaded in Globe. Anthony (to family he was called “John”) was the son of Anthony and Charlotte Maurel of Globe. Tony attended Globe High School, and then graduated in 1938 from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He achieved scholastic merit awards, was president of the Business Society Alpha Kappa Psi, and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He also received an ROTC officer commission in the U.S. Army Reserve. His first duty station was Fort Bliss, Texas as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry, the last of the traditional horse mounted Cavalry. In 1940 he married his love and life-long companion, Wilma N Harris, from Phoenix. With the changing prospects for war his interest in aviation led him to switch into the Army Air Core, which ultimately led him into the 1st Air Commando Group as pilot and later, squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Campaign (CBI) in 1944. He remained in the military after the war as a regular officer in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a Master’s degree at Columbia University and relocated with the family to various duty stations ranging from NATO in Europe, to the Pentagon in D.C, and finally as Air Force representative to The Boeing Company in Seattle. After retiring from the Air Force as a Colonel in 1962, he began his second career with The Boeing Company and worked there until his retirement in 1981. Tony and Wilma were both patrons of the arts and he served on the Pacific Northwest Ballet board. He also attended classes at the University of Washington and enjoyed playing golf. Tony will always be remembered by those who knew him as a thoughtful, dignified “chap” and as a kind gentleman to all. Tony is survived by his children, John Maurel (Kathleen) of Seattle and Diane Maurel Wustrack (Karl), of West Linn, Ore.; granddaughters, Gretchen Wustrack, Sonja Wustrack (Joe Slavinsky), and Rosie Wustrack Spitzer (Seth); and two great-grandsons, Oscar and Hugo Slavinsky. The family is holding a private service later in March. Remembrances can be made in Anthony Maurel’s name to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance - Attn: Donations, P.O. Box 19023 Seattle, WA 98109-1023.
