Howard Riley "Pinky" Myers was born Feb. 7, 1916, in St. David, Ill. He left us to join his loving wife on Feb. 28, 2013, in Prescott Valley, Ariz., at the ripe young age of 97.
As the oldest of four children, he quit school after eighth grade and went to work to support his family due to his father's illness and, at the age of 20, the family had moved to Tempe, Ariz. Throughout his life, he worked a variety jobs including service station attendant, tank driver, local bus driver, and his own business - Maricopa Roofing Company - from 1966 to 1987.
On Nov. 4, 1937, he met his wife, Ada Ruth Blanton, at a church social. They were married one year later on Nov. 4, 1938. He proudly served in the Navy as a cook from 1945 to 1946. They had their first son, Don, Nov. 17, 1942, in Tempe. Their second son, Howard Ray, was born on Nov. 30, 1945, in San Diego, Calif., while Howard was serving our country during World War II.
Howard enjoyed the great outdoors through camping and fishing with his family. In his later years, Howard enjoyed communicating on his CB radio and became an avid Diamondbacks fan.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents Howard F. Myers and Fern Estes Myers, his siblings and his wife.
He is survived by his two sons, Don Myers of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Ray Myers of Elizabethtown, Ky.; his seven grandchildren, Jeff Myers of Arizona, Julie Goss of Arizona, Hallie Polston of Kentucky, Stefany Myers of Kentucky, Lindsey McKenzie of Kentucky, Brian Myers of Arizona and Joshua Myers of California; and 11 great-grandchildren.
There will be a chapel service 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Greenwood Memory Lawn, 719 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix, Ariz. A celebration will follow at noon at Golden Corral, 7609 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix, Ariz.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the MUSD Special Olympics.
