CHILDRESS, JR., Charles William (Bill)

The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 03/12/2013 Charles William Childress, Jr. (Bill), 66, died March 3, 2013, in Springhill, Fla. Bill was born Jan. 5, 1947, in Pomona, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marian and Charles Childress. Bill is survived by his wife of 13 years, Kaye Alma Childress; children: Kristin Marie Jonker, Charles Arthur Childress, Brandi Michelle Worthey, Paulette Leah Driver; sister Kathleen Anne Tucker; grandchildren: Skylar Brooke Jonker, Dalton Christopher Jonker, Azaylia Childress, Phillip Joseph Driver, and Bailee Gabrielle Driver. Bill graduated from Pomona High School and served in the United States Air Force. He was a driver for Hostess for 31 years before retiring to enjoy the “good life.” While with Hostess, his trucker CB name was junk food junkie. He was loved by his fellow drivers and was a friend to all. He lived in Lake Havasu City, where he married Kaye in 1999. In 2006 he and Kaye moved to Show Low, and the outdoor life they both enjoyed. He became active with the Humane Society of the White Mountains and served on the Board of Directors for four years. A gentleman in the truest meaning of the word, Bill showed warmth, commitment and humility in his volunteer work for the annual Happy Tails BBQ and Auction, the shelter fundraiser at Charlie Clarks Orchard. Always there for set up, take down, ticket sales, he was real friend to the homeless animals in the community. In June of 2012, they moved to Spring Hill, Florida to enjoy the warm air and ocean front. After only nine months of the “good life,” Bill’s own life was cut short by cancer. He will be missed by many people whose lives he touched. A celebration of life will be held from 3-6 p.m. April 13, at the Frank Smith Art Barn on Buck Springs Rd. in Pinetop. The sign in front now reads The Gathering Place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Humane Society of the White Mountains are appreciated.
