Richard David Spengler
April 30, 1944 - February 21, 2013
Richard (Dick) Spengler, 68 of Tucson, AZ passed away peacefully on February 21 surrounded by his loyal wife of 50 years Connie (Nehm) and his 2 daughters Sherri Shope and Kristine Spengler. Dick was diagnosed in early January, 2013 with stage IV esophageal cancer and fought a valiant but short battle with the disease.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on February 28th at the Vistoso Funeral Home in Oro Valley, AZ.
Dick was born in Granite City, IL on April 30, 1944 and graduated from Mounds View High School (New Brighton, MN) in 1962.
Dick married his high school sweetheart, Connie, on December 1, 1962 – they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2012. Dick and Connie had 2 daughters, Sharon (Shope) and Kristine. They lived in & around Shoreview, MN for nearly 45 years.
Dick was an accomplished businessman. He and his partner started and grew Forest Lake Contracting (FLC), a general contracting road construction-company, in 1976. He retired from FLC in January 2007 and soon thereafter moved to Tucson, AZ, where he enjoyed the sun and year round outdoor living. Dick enjoyed many hobbies and interests throughout his 68 years including, photography, racquetball, running, biking, RVing, golfing, ATVing, and his favorite of all hobbies, “putzing”. He was also actively involved in the Saddlebrook Republican Club.
Dick is survived by his wife Connie, his daughters Sharon and Kristine, his granddaughters Katherine Shope and Emma Shope, and his sister Karen Spengler.
Dick was a kind-hearted, opinionated, uber-organized, dry-humored, and most of all, dedicated gentleman. He loved and cared for his family with quiet and reserved passion and unmatched loyalty. Dick will be most missed for his sense of humor, his opinions on all things political, and most of all for being the rock to his family.
The family of Dick wishes to thank Casa de la Luz Hospice for making the last few hours of Dick’s life comfortable and peaceful as well as the staff at Arizona Oncology for their straight-forward advice and care.
