Bunker Family Funeral & Cremation, Mesa, Arizona Ethelyn Johnson Madsen November 10, 1917 ~ March 23, 2013 Ethelyn Johnson Madsen passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013 in Mesa, AZ. She was born November 10, 1917 in El Paso, TX, the oldest of thirteen children born to William Percy and Ethelyn Haws Johnson. She was raised in Phoenix, AZ, graduating from Phoenix Union High School. Ethelyn married Spencer Duane Madsen Nov. 1, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Spencer and Ethelyn had five children. They made their home in Mesa, AZ after Spencer’s retirement as an LDS chaplain in the US Army. Ethelyn was active in the Mesa Museum Guild and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She earned a “Healthy Aging Award” in 1967 and represented the state of Arizona at the national awards convention in Washington, DC. Ethelyn and Spencer served four missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first was to Jamaica and the next to New Zealand. They were able to live at home for the third mission as they served at Deseret Industries. Their last mission was to Korea. Ethelyn is predeceased by her husband, her parents and nine of her siblings. She is survived by her three sisters, Priscilla Cahoon, Leah Arnett, Karen Eastwood, her five children, Duane Johnson Madsen, Ethelyn Madsen Glancy, Mark Spencer Madsen, Lynn Arthur Madsen, Duana Madsen, 29 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 10 AM at the LDS Olive Ward, 525 East 2nd Avenue, Mesa. A viewing will be held on Friday, March 29, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa. Interment will be at the City of Mesa Cemetery next to her eternal companion.
