KIELING, Kathryn (Kaki)

Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona, Sunday, March 31, 2013 Kathryn Prochnow Kieling passed away peacefully, at the age of 96, on February 1, 2013. Kathryn (Kaki) Sophie Prochnow was born on October 21, 1916 to Charles and Elise Prochnow in Flagstaff, Arizona. She was the tenth of twelve children. Upon graduating from high school, she obtained a nursing degree in El Paso, Texas. In 1941, Kathryn married Harry Joseph Kieling, a Yuma, Arizona native. They had two children, Mary Kathryn Uria and Harry Joseph Kieling Jr. Col. Kieling was in the Army Air Corps and United States Air Force which led to many moves over the years. They lived in Fairbanks, Alaska; Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Flagstaff, Arizona; Alexandria, Virginia; Hill Air force Base, Utah; Tokyo, Japan; Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; and Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. Upon retirement in 1962, they moved to Sun City, Arizona where Kathryn returned to nursing for several years. In the eighties, they moved to Villa Vallarta in Scottsdale and eventually settled at Pueblo Norte, also in Scottsdale. As a nurse, Kathryn was very well loved. When members of her family and extended family were ill, it was she whom they requested for private duty! Kaki was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She was the most caring, kind-hearted, loving and generous people you would ever know. She was also a devoted wife to her husband. She was an expert at many things, including packing and relocating. Kaki was also a gracious hostess and a supportive companion to the many social functions they attended. Kaki had a love of learning and studied flower arranging in Japan, photography and computer science in Arizona. The Kielings were loyal supporters of ASU football and had season tickets for many years. Kaki enjoyed golfing and playing bridge, which she enjoyed playing all of her life. Boy, she did like to win; both at Bridge and Video Poker at Laughlin, Nevada. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Kieling, in June of 1997. She is survived by her children Mary Uria and her husband Laz, of Chandler, Arizona and Col Harry J. Kieling Jr. USAF (Ret.) and his wife Pat, of Anchorage, Alaska. She has one surviving sibling, Eleanor Durkee of Sun City, Arizona; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is the very loving grandmother to Ann Schepps, Mark Girard, Kit Kieling and Todd Kieling. In addition, there are nine wonderful, great grandchildren. She was definitely a GREAT grandmother! Her family loved her very much and she is missed immensely. A, “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 in the auditorium at Pueblo Norte, 7100 East Mescal in Scottsdale, Arizona. A private funeral will follow at Paradise Gardens Cemetery in Scottsdale. Arrangements have been entrusted to Messinger Mortuaries. Flowers can be sent to The Forum at Pueblo Norte prior to the “Celebration of Life” service or contributions can be made to Hospice of Arizona.
