News-Herald (Wickenburg AZ) Saturday, November 9, 1901, p 4 Murderer Killed "Wouney" Hart Escaped at Yuma and Was Killed Two desperate criminals, Wouney Hart and Luis Leivas, a Mexican, escaped Sunday from the jail at Yuma, where they were confined, awaiting sentence for murder and highway robbery, and after securing arms and ammunitions, held up a switch engine and ran out about thirteen miles from town where they abandoned it and took to the hills. A posse was formed and left thirty minutes later and overtook the abandoned engine nine miles from town. The trail was found and the escaped prisoners overtaken by the posse after a seventeen mile chase. In the fight which ensued Hart was killed and Leivas captured. Hart is the man who killed Deputy Sheriff Matt DeVane at Yuma last January and was under sentence to be hung.
