STEWART, Vernon Samuel

MICHAELS, Ariz. – Funeral services for Vernon Samuel Stewart, 45, of Window Rock, were held April 22 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bishop Martinez officiated. Interment followed in Red Lake, N.M. Vernon was born Oct. 23, 1975, in Fort Defiance, into the Meadow People Clan, for The Charcoal Streaked Division of the Red Running Into the Water Clan. He died April 16, 2013, in Flagstaff. Vernon attended Window Rock High School and worked with asbestos and as a caregiver. He enjoyed rodeos, plumbing, telling jokes, roping, talking about his children in the military, and socializing with lifelong friends. Vernon is survived by his son, Benjamin Stewart of Fort Defiance; daughter, Shaunmychelle M. Stewart of Fort Defiance; and sister, Phillene Stewart-Herrera of Gallup. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Sonya Stewart of Window Rock; children, Ben and Shawn Stewart; brother, Phillip Stewart Jr. of Window Rock; and sisters, Victoria Stewart and Lynette Stewart of Window Rock. Pallbearers were Leon Sandoval, Leo Sandoval, Chris Begay, Ted Dodson, Ernie Tsosie III, Loren Price, Byron Begay, and Toby Radcliff. Honorary pallbearers were Ricardo Herrera, Eric Stewart, Darrell Stewart, Alfred Stewart, Al Stewart Sr., Franklin Stewart Sr., and Harry Stewart Sr. Silver Creek Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
