GALLUP – A Funeral Mass for Nonabah Doris Yazzie Begay, 83, was held on Monday, April 15, 2013, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup, NM. Burial was on family land in Chichiltah.
Begay died on April 9, 2013 in Gallup. She was born August 13, 1929, in Two Wells, into the Red Cheek People Clan, for the Towering House People Clan.
Begay retired as a nurse from Indian Health Service after 35 years of service. She never had second thoughts while providing the best healthcare for patients in the Nashville, Oklahoma, Shiprock, Gallup and Chinle, AZ areas.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas H. Begay, Navajo Code Talker, USMC, WWII; sons, Ronald C. & Reginald C. Begay of Albuquerque; Gerald C. Begay of Tucson; and daughter, Regina C. Roanhorse of Tohajiilee; brothers, Paul & Larry Yazzie of Chichiltah; sisters, Sadie Calvin of Chichiltah; Maggie Pino of Albuquerque; Rita Vallo of Rio Rancho & Nan Lee Burch of Fairfield, CA; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie & Anita Yazzie; brother, Tim Yazzie and sisters, Marion Pino; Jane Esticitty & Glessie Little.
Pallbearers were Russell C. Begay, Kristopher Roanhorse, Tim Curley, Rydell Anderson and Brian & Brandon Kinsel.
The family received relatives & friends at Red Rock Park.
Rollie Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
