FLEMING, Michael J. (Papa)

The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona, September 23 to September 24, 2007 Michael J. Fleming, 69 , "Papa" passed away at his home where he was surrounded by the love of his family on Weds., Sept 19th. Admired by all for his incredible attitude during his battle with cancer, he truly was an inspiration. He was an amazing husband; filled with the greatest love for his wife of 46 years, June. Their love and devotion to each other serves as an example to all of us. He leaves two sons, Michael (Sheri) and Patrick (Karen); four grandchildren: Michael (Santana), Kristy, Sean, 6-month-old Kelly, and great-grandchild 6-month-old Reece; surviving sister, Marie (Matthew) Johnson and deceased sisters, Virginia and Lucille; several nieces and a nephew. He was born in Chicago on Feb. 3, 1938. At the age of 19, he began his meat-cutting career with Jewel Food Stores where he worked for 21 years. Moved to AZ in 1978 and worked for Smitty's for 15 years as a Meat Manager; then 8 years as a Meat Buyer with Fleming Foods; retiring in 2001. In his retirement, Mike and June both worked as food demonstrators at the Chandler Sam's Club for the past 2 years. Mike passionately enjoyed this job and all the wonderful people there. He also enjoyed bowling, golf, dominoes and being in the company of all his friends and family. Many say that Mike was a "great guy " and that was so true. Mike was the kind of guy that many looked up to - happy, wise, fun to be with, always kiddin' around and someone you always wanted to talk to; yet he was silently strong, incredibly brave. He took great interest in listening to others and always had a pleasant attitude. We love you "Papa" and you will be in our hearts forever. Thank you for all the love you gave us. Service will be on Tuesday, Sept 25 at St. Stevens Catholic Church, 24827 S. Dobson Rd in Sun Lakes (Dobson & Riggs Rd), (480)895-9266, Rosary 9:30am, Mass service 10:00am. Church luncheon immediately following the service, all are invited to share in the celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in Mike's name to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phx, AZ 85014-5656.
