MUNKACHY, Robert Richard (Bob)

The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona, February 9, 2009 Robert Richard Munkachy died Tuesday, February 3, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marguerite, sons Eric (22) and Stephen (19), parents Dick and Marilyn, brother Dean (Libby), sister Kris, and eight nieces and nephews. Bob was born July 28, 1954 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The family moved to Tempe in 1960. Bob was educated in Tempe, attending Broadmor Elementary, McKemy Junior High, and graduating from Tempe High in 1972. He graduated from ASU in 1976 with a BA in chemistry, and was a proud member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. An excellent student, Bob enjoyed his classmates, teachers, professors and the school activities offered at all levels. Bob, an accomplished athlete, competed successfully at the state level in diving during high school. As an adult he continued to participate in numerous sporting and outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, water-skiing and golf. For many years Bob was an avid downhill skier and participated in this sport at the most challenging levels. He was a competitive racquetball player, winning several awards for his skill. Bob and Marguerite were married April 24, 1982. They made their home in the Valley, close to family and friends. Bob, gregarious and skilled with people, made a successful career in sales. They were active members of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, and enjoyed sharing holidays and special events with family. A few years ago Bob was contacted by his biological parents, and was excited to discover that he had biological siblings -- two sisters and three brothers -- and numerous nieces and nephews. This additional family brought him great pleasure. Bob dearly loved his family, was loyal to his friends, and was always upbeat about whatever was on the horizon. His happy smile and infectious laugh are remembered by all who knew and loved him. A Rosary will be held Wednesday, February 11 at 7:00 PM, and a Funeral Mass on February 12 at 10:00 AM, with both services at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 3450 West Ray Road, Chandler. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the establishment of a trust fund on behalf of Marguerite Munkachy.
