He was born Aug. 27, 1945, in Beaumont, Texas to Lenis and Margie Lertique.
Levis is survived by his companion, Mary Testa, of Globe, Ariz.; daughters, Roxanne Gill of San Diego, Calif., Giselle (Mike) Becker of Globe and Ursula (Tim) Rajkumar of San Diego, Calif.; son, Levi Max (Jennifer) Lertique of San Diego, Calif.; brothers, Bob James Lertique, of Globe, Daniel Lertique, of Mesa, Ariz., and Mark (Amy) Lertique, of Queen Creek, Ariz.; sisters, Sue (Neil) Mitchell, of Globe, and Linda Alcaraz of Phoenix, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Levis is preceded by his father, the late Lenis Lertique; his mother, the late Margie Fonteno Lertique; and his sister, the late Patricia Todd.
Levi graduated from Miami High School in 1963. He joined the U.S. Navy and was in active service for three years and then in the Naval Reserve from 1966-69.
He served on the U.S.S. Tortuga during the Viet Nam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
Levi attended San Diego State College and earned a degree in Physics. He worked for the National City School District while attending college and then went to work for General Dynamics.
Levi fulfilled a life-time dream by leaving the corporate world and becoming a cowboy. He went to horse farrier school in Phoenix. He then went back to California and worked with horses.
He was President of the San Diego Equine Club in 1999.
Levi retired and moved back to the Globe-Miami area. He loved the dessert and the open country-side here.
Working part-time at the Globe Public Library was very enjoyable to Levi. He was delighted to meet people and to be able to help them with finding just the right book.
He always had a smile on his face and something pleasant to say to the library patrons. He himself was an avid reader.
Many people have asked about Levi’s horse, Flash. Flash is a gelding, thoroughbred quarter cross horse. He is 14 years old and in his prime.
Like Levi, a young local man had always wanted a horse. Cody Belarde now owns Flash and like Levi, dedicates himself to the care of Flash.
Levi was a kind man who was always willing to help others. He helped many riders train their horses, he gave riders horse equipment if they needed it, and was always there when someone needed a helping hand. Even in death, Levi helped mankind by donating his body to medical research.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made in Levi’s name to the Globe Public Library at 339 S. Broad St., Globe, AZ 85501.
