Gilbert Lanier Calvert, 91, of Buckeye died June 11, 2013.
Mr. Calvert was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Hawley, Texas, to R.E. and Flora Calvert.
He moved to Liberty in 1935, attended Liberty Elementary and graduated from Buckeye Union High School in 1940. He joined the Coast Guard in 1942 and served until 1946 in the Southwest Pacific area.
He married Peggy in 1947 in Liberty and started working for L.D. McDonald, the Shell Distributor, in 1949. He purchased the business in 1968, forming Calvert Oil Co. and later expanded into retail gas sales and self-service car wash.
He served 16 years on the Buckeye Town Council and was a member of the Lions Club International Organization for 63 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Peggy.
He is survived by one brother, William of Laveen; two sons, Alan and David; one daughter, Connie; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Community Church of Buckeye, 808 E. Eason Ave. in Buckeye.
