CAMPBELL, SR., Melford J. (Tuffy)

West Valley View, Avondale, Arizona, Friday, June 14, 2013 Melford J. "Tuffy" Campbell Sr., 89, of Buckeye died June 10, 2013. Mr. Campbell was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Tyler, Ark., to James and Linnie Campbell. He moved to the Buckeye Valley in 1928. He took up boxing at the Armory and earned the nickname, "Tuffy." He joined the Navy during World War II and served aboard the Carrier Essex. He was at sea for 27 months without going ashore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Karstetter Campbell; and one son, Bruce Carter Campbell. He is survived by one daughter, Linda Sue; two sons, Brian and Melford Jr.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial reception was held Thursday at Ganley's Buckeye Funeral Home.
