The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 06/28/2013 Melanie Joy ‘Lani’ McGavock, 70, died June 24, 2013, in Scottsdale after a recent illness. Melanie was born Nov. 19, 1942, in Sharon, Pa., to Oswald and Eleanor Christie Maschgan. She was a 1960 graduate of Farrell High School in Farrell, Pa., and attended Youngstown Business School and the Artistic School of Beauty. She also attended the San Diego State University satellite campus and Northland Pioneer College, taking classes in interior design and business. Her passion was decorating her home and those of her friends. She was a voracious reader and loved traveling, music and dance. One of the items on her “bucket list” was to learn to dance the Argentine tango. She also enjoyed getting together with her girlfriends for “girls’ night out” and loved spending time with her wonderful, fun-loving family. She dearly missed her Pennsylvania friends and thought of them often. Her dogs, Willie and Lulu, were a very important part of her life too. Melanie worked in the Industrial Relations Department of the former Westinghouse Transformer Division in Sharon and held various other positions in California before moving to Arizona, where she was an administrative assistant to the principal at Show Low Junior High School for 20 years before retiring in 2004. She was a member of ABWA and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and a former member of Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church in Hermitage. Melanie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Melissa Jean Maschgan. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Mel McGavock of Lakeside; her son Mickey Ryan McGavock of Lakeside; her sister Marilyn Maschgan of Las Vegas, Nev.; her brother Erik Maschgan (Ruthanne) of Waretown, N.J. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 28, at Calvary Baptist Church, 241 E. McNeil, Show Low, AZ 85901.
