He was born in Galesburg, Ill. He married Marilyn, the love of his life, Dec. 30, 1945, in Springfield, Ill., and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last year. They moved to California in 1949. In 1976, Howard and Marilyn relocated to Lake Havasu City, which had been their vacation destiny for many years. They fell in love with the community and decided to make it their permanent home. Howard was a general contractor from 1976 to 1988 and built over 200 beautiful homes and commercial buildings in Lake Havasu City. He was recognized in the community as an industry leader in custom home and commercial development. He loved his work and felt rewarded by the many good friendships he developed with his clients. Howard and Marilyn enjoyed their retirement years traveling in their RV. They spent many summers in Oregon where they made lifelong friendships and enjoyed picking fruits and vegetables. They loved canning and sharing the fruits of their labor with their children and friends. He also had a passion for fishing which he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends. He knew the lake so well that if you were fortunate to be invited, you were in for a great day of fishing and most days would end with a full stringer. A proud American and Veteran, he served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mason; sons, Rick Mason and Howard Mason Jr. and daughter, Judy Gauthier; six grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
