Yuma Sun, Yuma, Arizona - Published in The Yuma Sun on July 3, 2013 >> Jane Katherine Peterson (1920 - 2013) << Jane Gamble was born in Wadsworth, Kansas, which is now known as Eisenhower Veterans Medical Center at Leavenworth, Kansas on May 8, 1920 to Joseph Stanley Gamble and Winifred Jane Hall Gamble. Jane attended kindergarten at Third Avenue School, then the family moved to Emporia, Kansas where she graduated from Emporia High School in 1938. She then attended College of Emporia (now defunct) for two years then in 1942 graduated from University of Missouri, Kansas City campus (it was called something else when she attended). After a brief marriage in 1944 to Perry Hubbard (which produced her daughter Penny), she and her daughter moved in with her family in 1947 which had returned to Leavenworth. Her mother died a few years later when the family unit became Jane, her daughter and her father. Jane held various jobs, including a few years at Leavenworth Times business office before starting at the Board of Education which had its office in the Fred Harvey House. She was a secretary with a long fancy title! She retired in 1982. After retiring she volunteered at the library in the genealogy room. Jane was active in Pilot Club International which was a service organization for professional women. She was an officer at the state level at one time. She was a member of the Leavenworth County Historical Society. In 1963, Jane married Albert (Pete) Peterson who worked his entire career with the Leavenworth Times newspaper. She and her husband were active in the First Methodist Church; in fact they were on the Board of Directors for a time. Jane participated in Lydia Circle and the craft club. They also traveled frequently with the travel clubs at their banks. She became a widow in 1992. In 1995, Jane moved to Yuma, Arizona where her daughter lives. She bought a mobile home in Casa Mañana where she participated in various activities; Saturday morning coffee, card and domino games, bingo, Lovely Ladies Lunch group, covered dish meals to name just a few. She also belonged to Newcomer Club and Trinity Methodist Church where she participated in TriNEWS. In 2002, Jane moved to Desert Rose (a retirement home which provides meals, but no medical care). Her hearing was bad before she moved here but it continued to get worse; she didn't wear hearing aids. When she determined she needed cataract surgery, it was too late; she was virtually blind too. At 90, when asked her age, she stated; I'm 90 and I don't recommend it!" She continued with that sentiment until her death on July 2, 2013 at 93. Jane was preceded in death by an infant brother in about 1922, her mother in 1951, her father in 1969 and her husband Pete in 1991(also by her first husband in 1995. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Penny Seitz and William (Bill) Seitz. Funeral Services will be at Johnson Mortuary in Yuma and Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth where she will be interred at Mount Muncie Cemetery, very near her birthplace and next to her husband Pete.
