She was born on Dec. 4, 1919 to Margaret Hampton and Sylvester Williston Merrick in Waco, Texas. She was a graduate of the University of Texas in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. For many years, she resided in California and worked as a teacher, a spiritual counselor, and a massage therapist. She relocated to Wickenburg in 1984, where she continued that work.
