The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, Arizona Thursday, July 25, 2013 Joy Annette Henderson 1942-2013 Joy arrived in this world in Denver, Colorado, on September 22, 1942, the first child of Ward and Dorothy Mathews. She departed from Cottonwood, Arizona on July 22, 2013 to be with her God. She was married for 52 years to Bud Henderson of Cottonwood. The mother of two daughters, Sharon Broady of Telluride, Colorado, and Catherine Nickels of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and a son Stephen who predeceased her. She was employed as an emergency medical technician and a dental assistant, but considered her most important job to be raising her children. Joy spent many hours volunteering in the public schools; in programs supporting abused and neglected children, as a Verde Valley Caregiver, as an avocational archaeologist and with her church. She was the unsurpassable volunteer - recognized by the Yucaipa, California school district with its "Founder's Day" award and by the Grand County, Colorado, Grand County Resources for Youth with its "Special Achievement" award for her involvement with teens with drug problems, by the Verde Valley Chapter of the Arizona Archaeology Society with their "Lifetime Achievement" award for initiating archaeology programs in the Valleys elementary schools, and by St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the 2013 diocesan "Woman of the Year" award, just for being who and what she always was - everyone's "woman of a lifetime." Memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 889 First South Street, Clarkdale, AZ, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 1PM. Reception will follow the service.
