Sherman, Richard (Dick) T. passed away on July 22, 2011 from complications of CMML-1 Leukemia. He was 65 years old.
Dick was born April 26, 1946 in Owosso, MI, the youngest son of Wellington H (Sherm) and Alice (Schele) Sherman. During high school he lettered in Football, Track & Field, & Basketball, served on Student Council two years and was a member of National Honor Society. Dick was elected Senior Class President of the Corunna High School class of 1964.
Since then, he has attended ALL class reunions that were held in his native Michigan, most recently his 45th in July, 2009. Upon high school graduation, Dick attended the University of Idaho (Moscow, ID), graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism. Dick was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha National Fraternity, serving his college chapter while there. He then served in the US Army Reserves from 1968-1975 achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant.
Dick returned from six months active duty to work as Alumni Editor for the University of Idaho Alumni Magazine and later as Assistant Alumni Director between 1969 and 1972. In later years he served on the U of I Alumni Relations Board as the area Alumni Representative from the Intermountain Region for three years.
Dick Sherman began his career in the field of Commercial Insurance in Spokane, WA; although most of his 39 year career was spent in Arizona.
His employers included: Aetna Life & Casualty (1972), CNA (1977), Marsh & McLennan (1979), Cargill, Sherman & Associates (1991), Adler-Downey of Arizona (1992), and since 2009, was a valued consultant with Sonoran National Insurance Group. He had earned both is CPCU and ARM designations. Throughout his career Dick was respected as an expert in the field and invaluable resource, always willing to share his vast knowledge with everyone.
Hobbies included: coin and stamp collecting, playing Keno, March Madness, attending LIVE Elvis Presley concerts in Las Vegas during the early 1970's, camping, fishing, reading, travel and enjoying his two sons activities/sports as they grew up. In 1988 Dick became a Cardinals Season ticket holder and began travelling to the family cabin in Arizona's White Mountains. These last four years he held both local and state offices in Woodmen of the World Lodge 5 and within WOW Arizona State Jurisdiction as well.
Family and friends will remember Dick as always friendly, trustworthy, kind, of good character, punctual, and AWESOME father and husband, a man of high principals and personal integrity, a devout Catholic, with a dry sense of humor, and mentor/trainer to many within the insurance business.
Dick married Marjorie Hillis (Rasmussen) on January 30, 1971 in Moscow, ID.
Dick is survived by his wife Marj, sons Michael Thomas Sherman (Lakewood, CO), and David Robert Sherman (Phoenix, AZ), Brother Bob (Judy) Sherman (Santa Fe, NM), Aunt Wilma Walworth (Vernon, MI), nieces Jennifer McIlyar & Lori Johnson, and cousins Jim Sherman, Terry Ann Walworth, Bill Walworth, Cynthia Morcott and Carl Scott.
A family scholarship endowment has been set up at the University of Idaho under the name Richard T and Marjorie H Sherman, benefiting undergraduate students.
The family is requesting that donations be made in Dick's memory, checks payable to 'University of Idaho Foundation', PO Box 443147, Moscow, ID 83844-3147, Attn: Christina Randal, Director of Development.
A private service for immediate family will be held shortly. In September, a Woodmen Of The World Flagpole Dedication/Memorial Service will be held for extended family & friends at the Lakeside, AZ Cemetery.
