Marguerite Elizabeth Wiegand Miller
1915-2013
Marguerite Elizabeth Wiegand Miller, 97, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2013. Marguerite was born at home Oct. 5, 1915, the eldest of six children born to Alwin and Frieda Wiehle Wiegand of Encinitas, Calif.
Marguerite graduated from Oceanside Union High School in 1932. On Jan. 19, 1941, she married Meredith Miller of Valley Center, Calif. Marguerite descended from some of the original Germans that settled the Olivenhain Community in San Diego County, Calif. The Wiegand Family became one of the prominent agriculture families in Southern California.
In early years, Meredith and Marguerite farmed in Southern California and then in 1956 moved, with their three children, to the Kansas Settlement near Willcox, Ariz. They were some of the first farmers, with several others, to break out and start the farming in the Kansas Settlement that it has become today. Her favorite saying was, “No Rest for the Wicked and the Good Don’t Need It”! And she lived by that motto.
Survivors include her daughters, Lynn (Nick) Cleckler of Ruidoso, N.M., Beverly (Richard) Anderson of Pratt, Kan., and a son, David (Carol) Miller of Pearce, Ariz. She is also survived by a brother Harold (Rolyne) Wiegand of Dixon, Calif., five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and two step great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Meredith Miller, infant daughter Meredith Ann Miller, grandson Erick Cleckler, and brothers, James Wiegand, John Wiegand, Dan Wiegand, and Carl Wiegand.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Picnic will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 at Turkey Creek in the Chiricahua Mountains outside of Willcox, Ariz.
In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made payable to the Marguerite E. Miller Memorial; Pratt County 4-H Foundation, c/o Beverly W. Anderson, 30443 NE 10th Street, Pratt, KS 67124.
