Gene, or Buzz, as many of his close friends and family knew him, was born to Percy Stephenson Cowell and Anna Gifford-Cowell in 1924, in St. Petersburg, Fla., both of whom preceded him in death. His loving wife of 65 years, LaVerne Dorothy Cowell, preceded him in death in 2011. Eugene’s only daughter, Linda Gail Cowell-Braman, also preceded him in death in 2003. He is survived by his son, Lawrence Cowell, of California; and his grandson, Steven Marcus Todd and his wife, Marty Grant, and their daughter, his great-granddaughter, Marlee Shea Todd, of Lake Havasu. Gene grew up and spent most of his younger years between his family’s home in Maine and Connecticut, and their summer home in Florida. After high school, he went on to Army Air Corps and was a fighter pilot in World War II. After he was honorably discharged from the military, he married LaVerne and they moved to Southern California, where he worked and eventually became a vice president with Bank of America. He retired from the bank after 40 years of service; then he and LaVerne retired to their summer home full-time in Parker. Gene was an avid airplane lover and pilot as well as a boat racer for years. He loved the River and spending time with his family and friends. Gene was dearly loved by all those who knew him and whose lives he touched.
