Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona, Tuesday, September 10, 2013 Mary Nixon February 5, 1911 - September 3, 2013 Mary Lucile Nixon was born Feb. 5, 1911 in Mt. Vernon, Ind., the youngest of four children born to Lewis and Anna Utley. She passed into the Lord’s presence on Sept. 3, 2013. Upon graduation from high school in Evansville, Ind., she passed the Federal Civil Service Examination and received an appointment as secretary in the office of Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C. While living in Washington, she married Owen Sharp. Three years later they moved to San Diego, Calif., where Mary continued to be employed by the Federal Government in the 11th Naval District and later by the Veterans Administration, making a total of 17 years with the government. She and Owen had one daughter, Marylyn. In 1955, Mary accepted a position as office manager and secretary of the College Avenue Baptist Church in San Diego where she was employed until her resignation in 1967. Her husband was very ill and she resigned to take care of him until his death six months later. In November of 1971 she married the Rev. Milo L. Nixon, and together they served as pastor of the Foothill Baptist Church in Sylmar, Calif., and subsequently served as interim pastor of several Conference churches. When Milo died she moved to Arizona where her daughter and son-in-law live. Mrs. Nixon is survived by her daughter, Marylyn. Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, in San Diego, Calif.
