ZIKA, George

Prescott Morning Courier, Prescott, Arizona Territory Tuesday, February 7, 1905, page 3 Death of George Zika George Zika, a highly respected pioneer miner of this section, passed over the divide in this city about 10 a.m. Feb. 6, 1905, after a short illness; but he had been in poor health for some months. He had an affection of the lungs. He was 62 years of age and a native of Austria, but came to the United States when he was 15 years old. He had resided in this section about thirty years and did some ranching when he first came here, but had devoted most of his time to mining. He was a galiant volunteer Union soldier in the late war and was a member of Company G, 47th volunteers. He was a member of the Barrett Post, G.A.R., and his funeral will probably take place under the auspices of that post, unless word is received from his relatives in Iowa to ship the remains there, and they have been telegraphed to. George Zika was considered a thorough miner. He owned a group of patented claims near Richenbar, upon which a deal was pending at the time of his death. The claims were once bonded to the Hearst people for $80,000, and he is said to have received a payment on them at one time of $ 25,000. The properties are in splendid shape and are properties of mineral merit. He was also interested with Sheriff Lowry and Jesse Robeson in the Silver Cord claim, Turkey Creek district, which is also a good property. His only relatives in this country live in Iowa, where he has a nephew by marriage, who is a prominent lawyer. He was an honorable men who made strong and lasting friends of all who came to know him. In his death this section has lost one of its most worthy pioneer miners. But, ere this, his spirit has been welcomed by those of old friends who have gone before, and feels great relief and happiness at its release from its aged and disease racked tenement of clay. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Arizona Daily Journal - Miner, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, February 8, 1905 The funeral of the late George Zika will take place this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the undertaking parlors of H. M. Maus & Co. Interment will be in the citizen’s cemetery.
