Ray was born April 22, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to David Garnet and Ruby Ball Emery. Ray grew up in Salt Lake City, graduated from East High School and later studied business at the University of Utah. Ray served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the East Central States Mission from 1940-1942. From an early age, Ray worked in the family owned grocery store, Emery’s Market. He later assumed the ownership and operation of the market, while becoming well- known for his custom meat-cutting. In 1969 Ray moved the family to Safford, Arizona and opened Gamble’s store, which became a well-known retail establishment in downtown Safford. Church service was always a part of Ray’s life. After retirement Ray and Margaret served as full-time missionaries in the Birmingham Alabama Mission, from 1987-1988.
