Patricia (Pippa) Kauders died peacefully in Wickenburg on Sept. 27.
Pippa was born in 1923 in Bedford, N.Y.
She graduated from Miss Porter’s School in 1941 and went to work in New York City, first at the B. Altman department store and later at Vick Chemical Company. During that time, she volunteered as a nurse’s aide at Roosevelt Island to help care for wounded veterans.
She then moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. It was in Washington where Pippa met and married (in 1954) Frederick Crockett, a dog handler and radio operator with the first Byrd Antarctic Expedition. They eventually settled in Beverly Farms, Mass., where Pippa established a major fundraising drive as the first Director of Development at the Shore Country Day School.
She also served on the Alumnae Board of Miss Porter’s School and the vestry of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
After the death of Freddie Crockett, Pippa married Frederick Kauders in 1982. They enjoyed 31 years together sharing their interests in travel and sailing.
In 1988, Pip and Fred discovered a mutual passion for the desert and settled part-time in Wickenburg.
Pippa embraced every person she met and therefore leaves behind a large number of dear friends. Her energy, humor, and graciousness were widely admired and appreciated.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Lisa Crockett and Phyllis Gallagher; devoted step-children; loving grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Massachusetts, and an informal gathering is being planned for Wickenburg.
In Pip’s memory, donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley, in gratitude for the good care they took of Pip in her final weeks.
Donations should be addressed to 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014-5656.
