LAVINE, John Frederick

Kingman Daily Miner, Kingman, AZ - Published on September 18, 2013 - John Frederick LeVine passed away peacefully in the home of his niece and nephew, Labor Day morning, Sept. 2, 2013. He had been in their home, under the direction of Living Waters Hospice, since the beginning of 2013. John, the second son, was born March 8, 1935, in Detroit to Frederick LeVine and Isabella Quinn. His older brother, Hal LeVine; two half-brothers, William and Jack Berger; half-sister, Anna-Jane Rogers; parents and stepfather, Paul Berger, all preceded him in death, as did his beloved wife of almost 48 years, Astrid Corrine LeVine. Growing up in Detroit, John attained the rank of Eagle Scout by age 16. He went on to serve in Korea with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 through 1955, attaining the rank of buck sergeant. Returning home, he went to work on the waterfront, finding his way to San Francisco/Oakland with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local 75, until his retirement. John was raised Catholic and was active in his Christian faith. He was a proud member of the Promise Keepers, and most recently attended Praise Chapel in Kingman. John's interests were making Southwest pottery, photography and film (8 and 16 mm). John's films saved many family images that otherwise would have been lost. Other interests were Western films, John Wayne and eagles. Eagles always held a fascination with John; today his friends and family know he soars among them. He is survived by his daughter, Diane (Tom) Jones, recently of Redding, Calif.; four grandchildren and spouses, Paul (Nina) Jones of San Rafael, Calif., Cynthia (James) Hall of Kentfield, Calif., Kimberly (Keith) Wiley of Redding and Scott Jones of Waimea, Hawaii; four great-grandchildren, Kody, Micah, Kaden and Leeland; two sisters-in-law, Carol Franzen of Kingman and Katherine McLean of Henderson, Nev.; 26 nieces and nephews and 33 great-nieces and nephews throughout the country. A viewing will be held between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave., followed by a celebration of life in the home of his niece and nephew at 1265 E. McVicar Ave. John will be interred alongside his wife Astrid and her parents in the Franzen family plot in Warrensburg, N.Y. Instead of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made in John's name to the Leukemia Foundation.
