CARAWAY, Walter Sanford


Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow, Winslow, Arizona Walter Caraway June 23, 1927 - October 03, 2013 Walter Sanford Caraway passed away on October 3, 2013 in Winslow, AZ. He was born on June 23, 1927 in Electra, Texas. He was the youngest of 8 children born to John and Francis Caraway. In his youth he moved with his family to homestead some land in El Morro, NM (south of Grants) As a young man he worked various jobs, but would relate the most recollections about the time he worked for the US Geological Survey. This took him to the Northwest and up into the Alaska territory. Upon returning to New Mexico he hired out with Santa Fe Railroad . He met Ann his wife in Gallup, NM, they married in 1954. All three of his sons were born in Gallup. In 1962 his work with the Railroad B&B (Bridge & Building) brought his family to Winslow, AZ where he resided for the last 50 years. Walter retired from the railroad in 1987 after 38 years of service. He had a long retirement and was able to enjoy many summers at Roosevelt Lake area doing what he enjoyed most, fishing and pitching horseshoes. Several bouts with cancer dominated his last few years. Through it all he relished his family and was most concerned with caring for Ann, his wife of 59 years. Most of all being around his children, grand-children and great-grand children was what he enjoyed most. He recently enjoyed a family trip to Vallecito Lake, CO. Other hobbies included, hunting and camping. He never missed a Dbacks game on TV and Phoenix Suns. Walter is survived by his wife, Ann Caraway; sons, Lloyd (Debbie) Caraway of Ft. Worth, TX., David (Delanna) Caraway of Ft. Worth, TX. and Robert (Shelly) Caraway of Winslow, AZ.; sister, Madge Burris of Grants, NM; 7 grandchildren; Brent (Leslie) Caraway of San Diego, CA, Dan Caraway of Weatherford, TX, Jon (Whitney) Caraway of Winslow, AZ, Andrew (Ivy) Caraway of Las Vegas, NV, Drew Caraway of Odessa, TX, Brian (Shae) Caraway of Grand Junction, CO, Logan Caraway of Ft. Worth, TX; 4 great grandchildren and 2 more great-grandchildren on the way. He is preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Holy Rosary for Walter Sanford Caraway, 86, will be recited Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 9:30 AM with Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Winslow, AZ. Burial to follow in Desert View Cemetery.
