John Elton Hanna Sr. (Big John) went to be with the Lord on Oct. 21, 2013, after a two-year battle with cancer. John was born July 15, 1954, in Roswell, N.M. to Randall and Betty (Wallace) Hanna.
In 1956, the family moved to Prescott, where John attended Prescott public schools and graduated from Prescott High School in 1972. After graduation, he attended Glendale Community College and Lubbock Christian College in Texas on a baseball scholarship. While in college, he married the love of his life, Sherrie Wayman, in 1976. After college, the couple returned to Prescott to raise their three children.
John worked as a general contractor for many years and then served his community as a Prescott police officer. He proudly served the city for 10 years and was voted Officer of the Year by his fellow officers in 1996. He retired from the force in 1999, but remained active in the community. John served on the Prescott City Council and stayed active in local politics. John was a man of his convictions; he cared greatly for the people of the community and was respected by many.
John enjoyed out-door activities including competitive men's fast-pitch softball, hunting, fishing and boating, coaching his children's baseball teams and golfing. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Prescott Church of Christ. John was a devoted family man and placed great emphasis on the importance of faith and family. He displayed unwavering strength and faith in the Lord to the very end.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Randall and Betty Hanna.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sherrie (Wayman) Hanna; his three children, John Jr. (Janine), Jacque (Corey Kasun) and Jake (Ginny); seven grandchildren; brothers Randy Hanna of Cornville and David (Becky) Hanna of Prescott; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends and loved ones.
Services are to be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at the Prescott High School Ruth Street Theater, 1050 Ruth St., Prescott. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Prescott Police Explorer Post Program.
