The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 11/29/2013 Michael P. Steiner, 73, died peacefully Nov. 19, 2013, during a short stay at the Eckstein Center, Hospice of the Valley, in Scottsdale, and after a long illness. He moved from Scottsdale to his year-round Lakeside residence in December of 2005. Over the years, the family frequently came to the White Mountains to camp, fish and ski. The White Mountains had a very special place in his heart and continues to do so for his wife of 51 years, Heather, and their three children, Scott, Stacy and her husband Alston, and Christopher and his wife Deanna. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1966. His professional career began as an assistant professor at the University of Idaho. He and his family then lived to Medellin, Colombia, South America, where he was a professor at the Universidad de Colombia under the auspices of the University of Nebraska. He returned to the United States to be on President Nixon’s Wage and Price Commission. In 1973, he accepted a position with Armour Food Company in Phoenix and was ultimately promoted to vice president of their International Meat Division, traveling the world. He returned to academia in 1982 to teach at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, followed by being on the faculty at Winona State University, an affiliate of the University of Minnesota system. While in Wisconsin, he frequently was a consultant to small businesses. In 1992, he moved to Scottsdale and owned a small business in nearby Fountain Hills called the Pony Express Business Center. He sold the business in 1999, and in his semi-retirement continued to teach as an adjunct professor at Mesa Community College and occasionally was a consultant to small businesses. He officially retired in 2005. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Church of Our Saviour, 5147 Show Lake Road in Lakeside. A celebration of life will follow the same day from 4-6 p.m. at Torreon Golf Club, 651 S. Torreon Loop.
