David Rueben Montoya, affectionately known as "Puga," age 70, of San Jose, entered into eternal rest Thursday evening, November 7, 2013, at his residence.
Puga was born February 9, 1943, to the late Pedro Luis Montoya and "Nena" Elvira Torres Ochoa in Clifton, Arizona. He grew up in Clifton and as a young man he worked at several local ranches. Puga attended Clifton Schools, graduating in 1962.
Puga met and married Irene Hernandez in January of 1964. Together they had six children: Jack, Maria, Jimmy, Tony, Tjo and Mario.
After graduating, Puga began working construction. In 1968 he gained employment with the Phelps Dodge Mining Corporation, and after 32 years of service he retired in 2000. After retiring he spent his time with his family hunting, fishing, and camping. His passion in life was the love he had for his horses.
A rosary for Puga was prayed by Father Robert Rodriguez on November 15, 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Solomon. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Father Robert Rodriguez was Celebrant with Tommy Lopez, Ernie Navarrete, Rocky Manuz, Franky Ochoa, Mike Chacon, Bobert Montoya, Chono Ochoa and Mokie Alvarez as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers were Nicolas Torrio, Shorty Torrio, Rueben Montoya, Anthony Montoya, Bryant Montoya, Selan Stout and Nolan Stout.
Puga is survived by: his three sons, Jack Montoya of San Jose, Antonio Montoya (Rachel) of San Jose, Mario Montoya (Erin) of Thatcher; his three daughters, Maria (Jimmy Lopez), Tjo Torrio (Randy) both of San Jose and Crystal Stout (David) of Winnsboro, Texas; one sister, Ham Mena of Clifton; one brother, Bobert Montoya of Thatcher; his 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who called him "Grandpa Puga."
Puga is preceded in death by: his parents, Pedro and Nena Montoya; by Irene Montoya; a son, Jimmy Montoya; one brother, Gabby Montoya; and one sister, Arlene Luna.
