Richard K. Nutt
January 7, 1946 - December 4, 2013
Rick Nutt went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 4, 2013. He was surrounded by his family, and close friends as they celebrated him at his bedside and said their good-byes. His love was for the family ranch where he and his wife, Becky, daughters, Charity and Chancy, made their home for over 28 years on one of the original homesteads.
Rick paid the bills by working at the Phelps Dodge, Morenci Mine for 34 ½ years, but lived his dream of one day having that world champion horse he could ride to the top of the mountain, gather some cattle on the ranch, or take to the arena and win the gold, by shoeing horses for 57 years.
Once he retired from Phelps Dodge, Rick and his family moved to Colorado where he began a full time horse shoeing business. He perfected his craft and built a large clientele. He had a great appreciation for many outstanding people he met and who become close friends that he admired. He very much appreciated those friends in Colorado and it was a sad time for him when he had to retire from horseshoeing this summer.
He was a horseman who understood that the “outside of a horse was good for the inside of a man” (Will James). He was a true cowboy, hard worker, smart, funny, had a story for just about anything, and loved his family. He will be missed.
Rick and Becky had “yours, mine, and ours” children. All special. Rick’s children are Ricky (Jacquelyn), Lacy, Ryon, Charity Cox and Chancy Nutt; Step-children Gary Scott (Lisa) and Breanne Schafer (Don). Rick loved all his children, understood and knew their uniqueness, and kept them in his heart, whether they were far or near.
His grandsons were a special legacy to him that he was able to pass on things like shooting the BB gun, rolling up their belt like cowboys do, wrapping water lines, digging post holes, or fixing the well. Jeryn and Jason Nutt; Conner, Nathan, Brexton Cox and Riley Burns and six other grandchildren. His step granddaughter, Alisha and husband Eric Patterson were a special addition to his life. He enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren Seiana, Drake, and Elija.
His paternal grandparents, LB and Nell Nutt, came to Clifton in the 1940’s where they owned the Triple A Dry Cleaners on Historic Chase Creek. His maternal great grandparents, Frank and Violet (Mooma) Davis founded the Davis Ranch in the late 1800’s where Rick was raised from age 12 by his grandparents, Travis and Margaret Davis. His father was Foy Nutt and mother Evelyn Joyce (Joy) Davis Nutt Fink. Second father, mentor, a man he loved, had the deepest respect and esteem for, Pete Brawley. Mike Schneider of Duncan was a special friend, like a brother, whom he loved and highly valued. Tim Hart was another special friend and support in his life.
Other living family include: sisters Terry Hatch and Becky Layton; Aunts Peggy Crawford and Sue Nielson Romney; Uncles Tom Davis, Bob Davis, and Rex Nutt. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services for Mr. Nutt are currently pending for January 7, 2013, and will be announced at a later date.
