John W. “Jay” Barber, born April 14, 1933, in Missouri, passed Dec. 8, 2013 in Clinton, Mont. While in his teens, Jay’s family moved to Denver, Colo., where he enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18. During that time he met and married Janice Moorhead. They were married for 37 years and had five daughters.
During his time in the service, Jay became an Airplane Mechanic, Flight Crew Chief and Staff Sergeant. He served his country honorably for ten years and was fiercely patriotic throughout his life. Jay loved America and all those who sacrificed to defend the freedoms we enjoy. Freedom and self-reliance were unwavering passions and he stood by his principals until the very end.
After leaving the military, Jay became employed with State Farm Insurance for nearly 40 years, while also earning his degree, and served in the capacity of Agent, Agency Manager and Agency Director. A successful businessman, his life was full of music, fun and excitement. Those who knew him will never forget his jokes and booming laugh.
During his retirement, Jay met his long-time partner and soul mate Ruthie Danna; they traveled in his motorhome, playing music and making new friends along the way. In recent years, they spent their summers at Jay’s Montana home maintaining an amazing garden, fishing and foraging for wild berries and apples. Friends and family will surely miss seeing him out on his tractor planting his garden, or singing songs and telling stories.
Jay is survived by brothers, Bob and Melvin Barber; his first wife, Janice Barber; his partner and soul mate Ruthie Danna; daughters, Cheryl Barber, LeAnn (Joe) Hodge, Laura Fendrick, Lisa Barber and Carrie (Ralph) Gorton; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Strait and his parents, Howard and Thelma Barber.
Jay loved the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming and his wish was that they be his final resting place. A celebration of his life is planned for the Summer of 2014. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all who have offered their support and prayers. Jay was truly blessed to have so many who loved him.
