Michael Edward Miller, age 71, of Ames, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2013. He was born in Lawton, Okla. on November 2, 1942, to the late Homer E. Miller and Theresa Miller (nee Arrowsmith).
Michael graduated from Ames High School in 1960 and received his bachelor of science in Journalism from Iowa State University and his master of arts degree in Personal Management and Administration from Pepperdine University. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity. He married Cynthia Marie Bonham on August 25, 1990.
Michael served his country in the United States Army and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In the civilian sector he worked as the Marketing Director for several Health Organizations in the state of Texas. After retirement he sailed the Western Caribbean on his sailboat, Dragonheart , with his wife, Cindy and daughter, Cynthia. For six years they made Guatemala, Central America their home port. He was an important part of the cruising community and will be missed by his fellow cruisers.
He is predeceased by his sister, Patricia Ann Miller.
Michael is survived by his wife, Cynthia Bonham-Miller; five children, Michael E. Miller II (Sarah Thompson) of Bourne, Texas, Kelly Miller of San Antonio, Texas, Christina Oakes (Todd Oakes) of Lafayette, Ore., David W. Lawson (Lillian Green) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Sarah E. Paddock of San Antonio, Texas and Cynthia Bonham-Miller, Jr. of Bullhead City, Ariz.; sister, Mary Jones (Ted Jones) of Ames, Iowa; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 9:00 a.m. (NV time), Monday, December 30, 2013 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3055 El Mirage, Laughlin, Nevada.
Internment will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2014 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
