David Curtis Philipps died on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2013, in Sun City, Ariz. He was 87 years old. He was born in Trinidad, West Indies, on April 8, 1926.
He married the love of his life, Nell Fitzwilliam, on May 1, 1949. They moved to the U.S. in 1953 and settled in Kingman, where they raised their 10 children. David worked at the Valley National Bank for several years, and later he was manager of Mohave Savings. He was also founder and president of Loan and Universal Savings.
He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council and the finance committee throughout the years.
After his wife, Nell, became ill, David retired from banking and moved to Sun City in 1987, taking care of her until she passed away in 1997 from Alzheimer's.
David was dedicated to his church and was an active member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Sun City. He was an avid golfer and would play three times a week with his group.
David enjoyed his very large family. He looked forward to different family functions, especially to all those Thanksgivings where around 60-plus family members would attend. He loved to laugh and joke with all his grandkids and great-grandkids.
David is survived by his brother, Victor Philipps (Barbara) from Ventura, Calif. David leaves behind his five sons, Rory (Lisa), Bruce (Julie), Brian (Cindy), Sean (Lorie) and Dirk (Sari). He also leaves five daughters, Donna Farner (Joe), Paula Schrader (Pat), Julie Mairo (Rick), Kim Paneie (Tex) and Karla Abraham (Brent). He is survived by 30 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and counting, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 4 in Sun City at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. The burial will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David's name to Food For the Poor, Inc., Alzheimer's Disease Research or Maryknoll Father's and Brothers.
