MARQUES, Daniel

Weekly Arizona Journal Miner, Prescott, Arizona Territory Wednesday, October 26, 1904, page 1, col. 1 & 2 Suicide Of A Mexican Frank Rodriguez, a sheep herder, in the employ of Joe Roberts, about ten miles north of town, reported yesterday afternoon to Rob Young, manager of the O. K. meat market that he had found the dead body of Daniel Marques, a Mexican camp rustler about two miles from camp during the day. Mr. Young notified Under Sheriff Joe Cook and Justice Talbot went out to make an investigation, the morgue wagon being sent out to bring in the body. On the arrival of the former there they found the body of Marques in a sitting posture with the back against a fence, with one leg stretched out on the ground and the other in a bent position and a ghastly bullet hole through the head. Marques was in town on Tuesday and had been drinking considerably and left for home riding a horse and driving a burro on which were packed some provisions for camp. The horse and burrow arrived at camp in the evening but Marques was not seen until his dead body was discovered Saturday. A six shooter of 45 caliber with three empty shells, one loaded shell and one chamber empty, was found beside the corpse and all the indications pointed clearly to a case of unmistakable suicide. The bullet had entered the right side of his head just above and a little to the front of the ear and had come out on the left side somewhat nearer the top of the head. The right ear was powder marked and the hair close to the wound was also singed. In the man's right pocket was found a pint bottle nearly full of whisky and a fifty cent piece. The body was brought to town and Justice Talbot will summon a jury and hold an inquest this afternoon. The scene of the tragedy was about a mile north of the target range. -------------------------------------- Weekly Arizona Journal Miner, Prescott, Arizona Territory Wednesday, October 26, 1904, page 3 Local Briefs - (From Tuesday's Daily) Daniel Marques, mention of whose suicide was made in Sunday morning's issue of the Journal Mine was buried on Sunday afternoon.
