Ernest D. Montiel, 86, passed away peacefully at his home Jan. 11, 2014. He was born March 19, 1927, to Ernest L. and Nancy (Dunlap) Montiel.
Ernie, as he was known to his family and friends, served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a Seaman 1st class on a submarine in the Pacific. He married his wife, Sandra, Feb. 15, 1992. Ernie was a retired Teamster, drove a truck for Dart for more than 30 years, retiring at the age of 62.
He loved going to the beach in his souped-up 1980 Bronco, 4-wheeling and rescuing stuck 2-wheelers at the beach. He also loved to ride his motorcycle. Ernie especially loved to tell stories and jokes that made you laugh until your sides hurt. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Sandra Montiel, of Lake Havasu City; sons, Randy, Jeffrey (Debbie), Gregory (Bev) and Brian Montiel; daughter, Melissa (Kevin) Mills; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; step-children, Deborah, David, Daniel, Melinda, Michelle and Aaron Barr; 14 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Celebration will be at Rotary Park Cabana, Saturday, at 1:30 p.m., with a reception immediately following at the VFW.
