GREER, Thadius Winston (Thad)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 01/24/2014 Thadius Winston Greer, 86, resident of St. Johns, died Jan. 18, 2014, in Springerville. He was born May 1, 1927, in St. Johns, the son of Dodd Lacy Greer and Wilmerth Hazel Butler. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Thad taught choir, Spanish, French and photography at St. Johns High School for many years. He also was superintendent of schools in Tacna, Peru. Thad was an accomplished musician and teacher. He was a well-known and accomplished rabbit judge who also worked with several youth groups. He and his wife, Nelma, served a mission for the LDS Church in Anaheim, Calif. (Spanish-speaking). They also worked in the Arizona Mesa Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thad is survived by his wife, Nelma L. Greer; sons: Thadius (Jill) Greer of Ohio; Lacy (Jeanne) Greer of Mesa; Vinson (Sherrie) Greer of Central, Ariz.; daughter Mary Serena Greer of St. Johns; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings: Leola, Mona, Lacy, Calvin, Kent, Dick and Joan; and grandson Adam Kent Greer. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at the St. Johns Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. Johns. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at the St. Johns Westside Cemetery. All previous choir members are invited to come and join in the choir.
