Marguerite C. 'Nellie' Schellenberg
Nellie Schellenberg was born in Whitehall NY on Jan. 13, 1916. She passed away peacefully in her Cottonwood Village apartment on Jan. 10, 2014, just three days before her 98th birthday, the last surviving member of her generation.
Nellie was an inspiration for many as she lived her life with great energy, curiosity, generosity and humor. Each day was a call to rise and shine. She delighted in sharing her interest in books, chatting with friends, shopping and learning about the world as it changed over her nearly 98 years, while embracing challenges of her advancing age with grace and dignity. She lived her younger years in New Bedford Ma., Maine, Vermont, Boston, NYC, and Fairhaven Ma., before moving to Az. in 2002.
Nellie was the sister of Hans, Peter, Roy and Elsie Darwin; daughter of Elsa Peter Darwin and Otto Darwin. She was an avid tennis player and bicyclist, gardener, swimmer, social activist, friend to those in need; an artist in living life to the fullest.
Nellie was a star student in her youth and she applied her talents to work in business before becoming a homemaker and devoted wife to Harry Schellenberg, mother to Conrad and Carl Schellenberg, Louise Churchill, and Peggy Chaikin; grandmother to Palo and Harmony Chaikin, Linda, Gregory and Ethan Schellenberg; Great grandmother to Katie, Arlo, Olivia, Tristan, and Marisa. She is greatly missed by friends and family who feel blessed to have had her in their lives.
