Jim (Papa) Cottingham, at the age of 77, took off into the sunset to his final resting place on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Papa was taken from us entirely too soon after a short battle with cancer. His journey was peaceful while being comforted by family in his son's home.
Jim was born and raised in Southern California. He then moved to Arizona where he owned and operated a family resort, "The Jolly Knight," in Parker. After many years of fun in the sun, he relocated to Prescott, Ariz. During his lifetime, Jim wore many hats, such as volunteer fireman, deputy sheriff, real estate agent and "The Phone Doctor." Jim's passion for enjoying life was evident in the things he loved to do, which included camping, motorcycling, traveling, rodeos, shooting guns and, above all else, spending quality time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 55 years, June. He was a very proud father of two children, Jeff and Jamie; and an even prouder grandpa of four boys. Jim is also survived by his younger brother Grant, as well as many other extended family members.
The family would like to express a sincere gratitude to Hospice of the Valley. Their gracious care and support allowed the family to surround him with love around the clock until he was ready for his last ride into heaven.
A celebration of life will be held honoring Jim (Papa) 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at The Gardens at Willow Creek Clubhouse, 1177 Lilac Way, Prescott, Ariz. The family would appreciate that any memorial contributions be made in Jim's name to the 100 Club of Arizona, which is an organization close to Jim's heart (caring for families of firefighters and police officers).
