Mary Elizabeth Outie, 84, of Moenkopi, Az., passed away on February 7, 2014 at the Flagstaff Medical Center surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Tuba City, Az., on October 22, 1929 to Victor and Ramona Sakiestewa, Sr.
Mary grew up in Tuba City and Moenkopi with 7 brothers and 3 sisters. She had 2 kids from her first marriage; and, on June 16, 1958, she married the love of her life, Andrew Outie, with whom she went on to have 5 children. Mary spent most of her life serving as a cook in Tuba City, Chinle, and Whiteriver until she retired from the Whiteriver Indian Health Service Unit in 2002. Mary lived, worked, and raised her family in Whiteriver for 30 years before finally moving back to Moenkopi in 2003. She spent the last 11 years of her life living in Upper Moenkopi.
She was a sedulous and dedicated mother, sister, friend, and grandmother who enjoyed baking, cooking, bowling, sewing, cross-stitching, traveling, and caring for her family.
Mary is preceded in death by her late husband, Andrew Outie; 4 brothers: George, Warner, David, and Morrison Sakiestewa; 3 sisters: August Sakiestewa, Frances Nelson and Rosie Honanie; 4 children: Jeanette Outie, Leland Elmer, Harlan Outie, and Daryl Sakiestewa; and, 1 grandson: Marques Outie.
She is survived by 3 daughters: Genevieve Outie, Karen (Lucky) Holden, and Andrea Outie; 3 brothers: Victor Sakiestewa, Jr., Ernest (Jane) Sakiestewa, and Leroy (Alice) Sakiestewa; 1 sister: Ethel Gilbert; 8 grandchildren: Waylon Outie, Michael (Adrienne) Holden, Megan Antone, Michelle Holden, Carl Onsae, Christine Holden, Andrew Lomavaya, and Ashley Lomavaya; 3 great grandchildren: Abel Outie, Bo Holden, and Christin Outie; and, Goddaughter, Mary Corona.
Mary was laid to rest at the Citizens Cemetary in Flagstaff, Az. on February 12, 2014.
