Leslie Stettler
She was an artist, from her soul to her fingertips. Her subjects were tropical birds, grandkids, and people she cared for as a Registered Nurse in the Alzheimer’s Ward of Royal Gardens Health and Rehab Nursing Home in Grants Pass, Ore.
Leslie passed on the morning of Feb. 1 but lives on through her oils, pastels, watercolors, and loved ones.
Born Feb. 28, 1939 in Boyle Heights (Los Angeles) to Alvin and Faye Haserot and raised among the wheat fields of East Los Angeles, Leslie graduated from San Gabriel High School in San Gabriel, Calif., and began raising a family in San Gabriel and El Cajon.
As the children graduated, Leslie yearned for new challenges, and after a few years as an LVN, she went on to graduate with a nursing degree from Los Angeles College.
She worked a few years at La Habra General Hospital but soon heeded her classmates’ calls to join the RN staff at the Orange County Jail in Santa Ana, Calif.
She retired in 1989 to move with her husband John to Grants Pass, Ore., where she nursed part time, dabbled in her “English Garden,” and painted and won a number of “Best-in-Show” Awards and blue ribbons at the Oregon County Fairs.
After 10 years, Oregon seemed too damp and cold, so she and John moved to Daytona Beach, Fla., for more sunshine and warmer weather. Unfortunately, with the good weather came rather bad humidity, so they ended up in Wickenburg in late October, where they were renovating a bank-owned home on West Yucca Drive when a rapidly advancing cancer took her to the Lord.
Leslie is survived by her husband John of Wickenburg; brothers Dennis of Carmel, Calif., and Glen of Orange County, Calif.; sister Christy Pack of Bend, Ore.; son and daughter Michael Luttio and Jan Hammers of Cedar City, Utah; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Leslie’s life will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday (Feb. 22) at the Community Alliance Church, 905 Falcon Dr., in Wickenburg. A reception will follow immediately at the church.
