The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona, Wednesday, February 26, 2014 Mary Evelyn Moran, 94, passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2014, in Prescott, Ariz. Mary was born to Milton R. and Katie (Nunemaker) Hess in Sterling, Ill., on June 23, 1919. She was the seventh of 12 children. After graduating from Lanark (Illinois) High School, Mary completed nurses training at KSB Hospital in Dixon, Ill. She enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps in 1942. After basic training, her unit was deployed to Fort Dix, N.J. from where they boarded Her Majesty's Queen Elizabeth troop ship for transport to Scotland. The unit arrived in Gourock, Scotland, on June 5, 1943, the night before the French Invasion and the start of World War II. Mary helped set up the 1,000 bed 297th General Hospital in Stourbridge, England, where she served until VE Day. She was discharged in December 1945. Mary married Clefford B. Moran Jr. in Dixon on Jan. 18, 1947. Their three children were born in Dixon. In 1958, the family moved to Tucson, Ariz., where Mary lived for 50 years. She worked as an RN at Tucson Medical Center until her retirement in 1984. Mary enjoyed bowling, crafts, bingo and going to the casino. She is survived by her children Kathleen (Tim) Nicholas of Lees Summit, Mo., Bruce Moran of Tucson, and Marcia (Gary) Jacobson of Prescott; four grandchildren, Debbie Allen of Derby, Kan., Lisa (Lonnie) Aulger of Mesa, Ariz., Bruce Moran of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Adam Jacobson of Prescott; four great-grandchildren; her sister Gladys Lindsay of Rockford, Ill.; and brother Harold Hess of Byron, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.B. Moran Jr.; her grandson Kevin Allen; four sisters; and five brothers. At Mary's request, there will be no funeral. Internment with military honors will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at the Prescott National Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of Highgate Senior Living and The Marley House for their love and care of Mary.
